Although the utilisation of bamboos has been well established in the Malesian region, intensive taxonomic studies are still urgently needed because the available treatises are inadequate to clear up the generic and specific delimitation in the light of newly accumulated evidence. Experience derived from revising one of the major Malesian genera indicated that more field observations of bamboos in Malesia are needed. A review of present knowledge on some aspects of bamboo biology (such as systematic analyses of anatomical and chemical properties, ecology and biogeography) indicates the magnitude of the research to be performed to complete a modern taxonomic account of Malesian bamboos, which would also meet current demands from industrial sectors. Some specific problems related to taxonomic delimitation of Malesian Bambusoideae are discussed. |
