Eight albino rats were trained on a CRF schedule to press a lever for intracranial stimulation of the caudal lateral hypothalamus. Four learned a successive discrimination in which the S D (a white noise and a light together) lasted for 1 min, and four learned a successive discrimination in which the S D lasted for a fixed number of reinforced responses that was reduced from 40 to 1 over the course of training. The interval between S D presentations was varied, from 7.5 sec to 30 min. Preceding S Δ duration had no effect on response measures (latency of the first response and rate) taken during each S D presentation. The latency of the first response to the S D remained quite small well into extinction for a majority of the animals. The significance of these results for drive induction theories of intracranial self-stimulation is considered. |
