Popis: William Moncrieff Haining, who has died aged 88, was an ophthalmologist, clinical innovator, and mentor, who founded the eye unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and led it for almost 30 years. Born in Durban, South Africa, where his father, a Scottish engineer with the Cable and Wireless Company, had been posted, he spent his childhood in Lockerbie, near Dumfries. He trained in medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he was influenced by the great anatomists of the day, and in particular by the striking imagery captured in the anatomical plates painted by Edward Bald Jamieson. “Wee Jimmies,” as they were known, demonstrated to him the power of visualising anatomy in understanding pathology, something that later was to inspire his research in retinal angiography.
