Popis: The experiments described here were designed to study the interactions of macrophages and fibroblasts during the development of pulmonary fibrosis following a single intratracheal injection of 2 mg crystalline silica (particle diameter 0.3 µm), or 0.1 mg crocidolite asbestos fibers of two lengths: short fibers of less than 2.5 µm with a mean length 0.6 µm, and long fibers greater than 2.5 µm with a mean length 24.4 µm (Adamson and Bowden 1987a,b). With these models few if any gross changes are seen. Readers seeking detailed descriptions of the pathology of experimental asbestosis and silicosis are referred to the reviews of Wagner (1990) and of Wagner and Wagner (1990).
