Popis: | Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting up to 20% of the US adult population. Researchers have found an association between intestinal flora alterations and the pathogenesis of IBS. Immunologists believe that 70% or more of the human immune system is contained within the gastrointestinal tract. Resident bacterial flora has an intimate interaction with the immune system and plays a significant role in modulating inflammation. Probiotic bacterial strains may be useful for treating IBS symptoms by altering the composition of the intestinal microbial flora. This chapter reviews some of the evidence for the beneficial effects of probiotics in IBS. |
