Beverages are an indispensable aspect of nutrition and refreshment, so much so that today they are available in numerous varieties which cater to different requirements of humans. However, with the boom in the beverage industries providing inexhaustible choices to the consumers, the quality of the beverages produced may be slightly affected. The maintenance of beverage quality is often achieved by employing various additives, which are available in several types, depending on their usage. Some additives, whether naturally or artificially derived, may contain trace metal components. A few metals may accumulate in the human body on excess consumption and lead to undesirable health disorders. Thus, proper and frequent monitoring of commonly available beverages is critical in managing public health. This chapter gives a discussion on the use of both conventional and flow-injection preconcentration systems hyphenated with spectro-analytical techniques making use of solid-phase extraction for the separation and determination of a variety of metals in beverages. |
