Popis: This paper draws attention to the fact that the meaning of the term ‘model’ and the meaning of many related terms such as ‘representation’, ‘object system’ is not satisfactorily defined in the context of information systems development. We argue that the importance of key concepts like the model concept justifies repeated attempts to clarify its meaning. Firstly a better understanding of the term ‘model’ is important for effective communication with managers and users during the development of information systems and secondly research areas like model management and metamodelling will benefit from an investigation into the essential aspects of the modelconcept. Understanding what a model is will at least be very difficult if one does not know what one can do with a model. We will argue that the difference between ‘a model’ and ‘a body of information’ is based primarily on meta-information which can be used by a user, or an automated modelmanager.
