Popis: This chapter is concerned with readings of children’s texts that comment on the re-ordering of the world around the battle lines drawn after 9/11 and 7/7. If, after the attacks on the Twin Towers and the London bombings, the contemporary terror threat reverberates beyond the collective adult psyche to the child’s play, it has also informed a large group of children’s novels that chart the impact on children of the lived experience of terror or the threat of terrorist attacks, and represent complex questions of humanity, mortality, and moral agency to younger audiences. Through their focus on the practices of play, the novels considered here explore the psychological aftermath and ethical implications of terrorist attacks and their global repercussions. Contemporary children’s fiction is presented as well placed to offer powerful imaginative interventions in this new world order.
