Abstract: This article analyzes five little-known poems included in Flor de sonetos (1940) which were published by Spanish writer Enrique Lopez Alarcon (1881?–1963) during his short exile in the Dominican Republic. Despite his commitment to the Republican cause in Spain, this author paid homage to the tyrant Rafael L. Trujillo in order to gain the regime's approval in his new place of residence. The nature of these laudatory verses allows us to understand the political control that the dictator established not only over the Dominican citizens but also over foreigners who arrived on the Caribbean coasts to escape from the wars in Europe. The presence of these anti-fascist visitors in a country governed by a tyranny similar to that of Franco, Hitler, or Mussolini, was possible due to the adulatory discourse professed by some of them, for which they received some economic and moral compensation. |
