There has been much recent interest in high average power solid state lasers. This has been stimulated by interesting laser and process development by Lumonics under the EU6 and EU249 Eureka projects. This has demonstrated average power up to 2.3kw and the reliable transmission of this power through an optical fibre. More recently lasers of peak power over 4 Ok w have been demonstrated and will shortly be available. This paper summarises some welding results obtained with these lasers. We will show how a good understanding of the importance of peak laser intensity has helped the development of two distinct families of industrial laser products, shown schematically in fig 1. |
