Popis: Making use of mostly local sources (including previously closed archives), this article examines the upheaval of 1905 in the city of Tver. Textiles dominated Tver’s industry and yet, while textile workers were among the most brutally exploited in all Russia, in Tver they only gradually embraced the revolutionary movement. The defenders of the status quo in the city were vastly better organised and were quick to use violence. After the failure of the December 1905 uprising, most of Tver’s workers found themselves unemployed and facing the possibility of starvation. The net result of 1905 in Tver was the thorough radicalisation of its working class and the generation of a rage that fully expressed itself in the February Revolution.
