We investigate two aspects of emulsion polymerization through fluorescence studies of models of those processes. The first is the uptake of monomer by seed latex using poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) seeds labeled with phenanthrene (Phe) groups. Nitroalkanes serve as models for the monomer. Data analysis gives the partition coefficients and the diffusion coefficients (D) of monomer inside the latex (D = 6 × 10−8cm2s−1). The second aspect involves the generation of core-shell structures in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latex where the Phe-labeled seed is treated, during the second stage polymerization, with additional MMA plus a polymerizable anthracene (An) derivative. The extent of Phe to An energy transfer in the final latex measures the amount of mixing of added monomer during the second stage polymerization. |
