Popis: A review of the literature, histochemical and electron microscopic observations, radioimmunoassay and phosphorylase activation measurements indicate that the appearance of phosphorylase activity correlates with that of pancreatic glucagon secretion and is a prerequisite for the response of hepatic and cardiac glycogen to the hormone. The early appearance of glucagon in the embryonic gut suggests that this hormone may play a role in development. It is important to point out that although the gut continues to produce glucagon-like materials after birth, its ability to produce insulin is restricted to the embryonic and neonatal periods.
