Popis: | Carbon dioxide is building up in the atmosphere, but geochemists and ecologists disagree about the source of the carbon. Geochemists argue that the combustion of fossil fuel, plus the interactions of carbon dioxide with the sea, explain the increase. Ecologists argue that deforestation and land use change over the past century have been an important additional source. Both make assumptions about the accumulation of carbon in the oceans or change in biomass of the forests of the earth that are difficult to confirm by measurements. Resolving these questions will require continued study of the atmospheric CO2 content, better estimates of the CO2 in the pre-Industrial-Age atmosphere, more measurements of isotopes in oceans and tree rings, better estimates of forest clearing rates, and experiments with CO2 fertilization of natural ecosystems.
