According to substantial evidence the secretion of the subcommissural organ (SCO) is primarily released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (see Sterba 1969; Oksche 1969; Leonhardt 1980; Rodriguez et al. 1987). It is also well established that the bulk of this secretion, upon release into the CSF, becomes densely packed in the form of Reissner’s fiber (RF) (Fig. 1). In this respect, the most convincing evidence has been gained from immunocytochemical investigations. Antibodies raised against RF extracts react specifically with RF and the secretory material stored in the SCO proper (Sterba et al. 1982; Rodriguez et al. 1984). On the other hand, antibodies against secretory products extracted (Rodriguez et al. 1985; Meiniel et al. 1988; Karoumi et al. 1990) or purified (Nualart et al. 1991) from the SCO immunoreact with RF. |
