Gender considerations in research methodology often focus on gender-oriented topics in the global north with little attention on gender perspectives in ostensibly neutral disciplines such as health, and with even less consideration in African societies. Based on ethnographic studies on family care for cancer patients in Accra, Atobrah discusses how she confronted and utilised gender performance and expectations of her research participants during data collection periods. She further engages the realities of dealing with her own gender sensitivity as she confronts masculinity and femininity reactions by research participants while being culturally sensitive and ethical at the same time. Atobrah argues that in highly gendered societies like Africa, females may have unique opportunities in doing field research because of gender stereotypes that favour women. The female researcher’s inability to manage gender expectations by the research participants has a high tendency to ruin the research process and its outcome. |
