Since 2009, a series of plans were developed articulating the conservation design and strategy for the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge in New Hampshire. A Comprehensive Conservation Plan was completed in 2009, a Habitat Management Plan in 2010, and a Forest Management Plan in 2012. This chapter provides an example of a strategic approach to landscape conservation and a process used to step down landscape goals to forest management actions. Forest management at the refuge is used to: (i) sustain well-distributed, high-quality habitat for species of conservation concern; (ii) where consistent with management for those refuge focal species, protect critical deer wintering areas; and (iii) provide connectivity of habitat types for wide-ranging mammals. Timber harvests are conducted on the refuge to achieve its biological goals and objectives. |
