This chapter traces two key societal systems that form part of the macro landscape influencing green skills – the transitioning environmental regulatory and policy system and the transitioning education and training system. Both these systems are undergoing rapid and ongoing transitions while operating within a changing society. Located within an historical perspective on the green economy trajectory, and its alignment or mis-alignment with the parallel yet interconnected emerging education, training and skills development system in South Africa, this chapter contextualises green economy transitions, by analysing macro-economic drivers, and illustrates the impact of green economic restructuring of sectors and industrial segments on the labour market – including the identification and anticipation of the skills needed for green transitions. |
