The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of using ultrasonic immersion testing as a simple procedure to identify and quantify the effects of immersion on a compacted soil. Preliminary tests were made on a soil compacted at various moisture contents. The soil surface and the ultrasonic probe were both immersed in water and separated from one another by a fixed vertical distance. The transmitted signal (pulse) and the received signal (echo) were monitored for changes with time using an oscilloscope. The results demonstrated that ultrasonic testing of the soil may be used to give an indication of the soil surface swell due to soil compaction. The magnitude of soil swell was observed to increase as the compaction moisture content decreased with the exception of the sample compacted at a moisture content of 2%. |
