Popis: Concentrated oil-in-water emulsions of three viscous crude oils (Grosmont, Cold Lake and Boscan) were prepared by treating the crude with NaOH. The effects of NaOH concentration, oil concentration, and aging on the viscosity, particle size distribution and stability of the emulsions are reported. Emulsions containing up to 75% crude were prepared with the Boscan and Cold Lake crudes. The emulsion viscosity depends on crude oil concentration and electroviscous effects. The latter depend on the ratio of NaOH to the total acid number (TAN) of the crude. Extrema in viscosity and particle size of the emulsions occur close to the TAN. By controlling the electroviscous effects, high shear rate viscosity can be maintained below 0.2 Pa s up to volume fractions of 70%.
