Popis: Face-to-face dialogue is uniquely different from other forms of language use, such as monologue, written, or mediated formats. Many language scholars consider face-to-face dialogue the original and basic form of language use, from which other formats are derivative or secondary. Several defining features of face-to-face dialogue combine to provide unique advantages over any other format: The speaker and addressee share a social and physical context. Their exchanges are spontaneous and instantaneous, permitting reciprocal responses within a second or less and often overlapping. Face-to-face dialogue is also multimodal, integrating words and voice qualities with co-speech gestures (hands, faces, and gaze). These features of face-to-face dialogue are only accessible by microanalysis, that is, second-by-second analysis of video recordings with suitable software, as illustrated on the website accompanying this book.
