Popis:	The northern North Sea and the Norwegian Waters are areas well investigated in respect to phytoplankton. According to numerous reports, the predominant species in spring after a mixed diatom population are of the genus Thalassiosira and Chaetoceros. Especially Chaetoceros debilis is recorded as occurring usually in high numbers, sometimes more than a million cells per liter (Braarud et al. 1953, 1958, Paasche 1961, Braarud et al. 1980).
