Popis: Globally, the energy requirements increase every day, which pose the risk of energy crisis in the future, as majority of the current need is met by crude oil. Further, environment pollutions caused by waste materials are a major concern. This study was carried to find the suitability of food waste and water hyacinth for the production of biogas at mesophilic temperature. In India food wastes are produced in large quantities. They are disposed off in open dump yard which create many health problems and also one of the main source of methane which is GHG. Another serious issue prevailing in both developed and developing countries is the disposal of the perennial aquatic plant called water hyacinth. These plants are normally disposed in open dumps which also create many serious environmental problems. A digester has been designed to treat both the food waste and water hyacinth together for the generation of biogas. The experiment was carried out for a period of 40 days. Three experimental setups were prepared with different ratios of food waste and water hyacinth with a total volume of 14 L. Parameters such as total solids, total volatile solids and pH were analyzed every day. It was found that the generation of biogas increased with increased concentration of water hyacinth. This proved that the management of water hyacinth could be increased by biogas generation which could convert waste to fuel.
