Popis: | Daily activities within our abattoirs are usually associated with some pollution problems especially when generated wastes are not properly disposed. The present study examines the groundwater quality around abattoirs in Keffi, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Well-water samples from nine different locations were obtained. The study area was divided into three (3) zones viz; no abattoir area, central abattoir area and mini abattoir area respectively. The results from field and laboratory analysis showed that the samples from abattoir areas have higher concentrations of many of the parameters tested than those away from any abattoir. The abattoirs were seen to influence the concentrations of sodium, chloride, calcium, potassium, nitrate, sulphate and pH. Result of the analysis was also compared with World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigeria Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) and revealed that most parameters are within the guideline values except magnesium, potassium, electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids in some samples while the microbial content suggests that the samples are somewhat polluted and not safe for consumption without treatment. |
