The book «Samuel Beckett: History» written by well-known translator Alla Nikolaevskaya appeared to be the first biography of one of the greatest Irish modernists published in Russia. With the help of credible sources the book author aims to point out the origins of writer’s oeuvre. So she includes the memoirs of Samuel Beckett and his contemporaries into her text. The biographical research was highly appreciated by participants of the annual International Fair of Intellectual Literature «non/fictio№». Nevertheless some literary scholars, including Russian specialist on Beckett A. Ryasov, had to demonstrate multiple blunders and inaccuracies of Nikolaevskaya’s work. Apart from that, she tends to use the texts of western scholars without proper references. This review gives a general account of the contribution made by Nikolayevskaya A.G., and of main weaknesses of the biography, which regretfully do not let the book be regarded as a full-fledged research of life and oeuvre of the writer. |
