Popis: The behavioral sequence for host finding and oviposition was described for Apanteles marginiventris (Cresson) on corn plants damaged artificially or by 2nd-instar larvae of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). Corn plants with FAW damage had the highest number of parasitoids present and exhibiting searching behavior. Artificially damaged plants had approximately the same number of parasitoids displaying searching behavior as did undamaged plants; however, artificially damaged plants did attract or retain substantially more parasitoids. During a 5-min observation period, parasitoids spent ca. 3, 17, and 83% of their time searching on undamaged, artificially damaged, and FAW-damaged plants, respectively. Highest parasitization rates occurred among 2nd-instar larvae collected from the leaves of plants damaged by FAW larvae. No parasitization occurred in larvae collected from the whorls of damaged (FAW or artificial) or undamaged plants.
