Popis: Visible light communication (VLC) is a key technology that will support femto-cell based mobile communication networks. The reuse of the omnipresent LED lights as short-range data carrier may be an environment-friendly add-on to the radio frequency-based mobile network. Thus, VLC can be a green technology, and it also can support internet of things battery-less devices by enabling wireless energy transmission and data connection. However, such advantage is well known to have a price which can be expressed in lighting device complexity and also in energy cost of operation. This paper addresses the choice of driver circuit type and data modulation strategy in a framework based on the known VLC channel, LED and circuits models. A typical application of VLC is considered in the analysis. The energy cost of implementing VLC with linear class AB amplifiers is found to be the lower among those compared ones. However, auxiliary power sources are required, which is not an ideal solution for all applications. A switching mode power converter modulating average current have the higher energy cost in the analysis. A similar switching mode converter implementing ripple modulation have up to an order of magnitude lower energy cost because of reduced switching frequency requirements. The modulation selection is relevant to the energy cost only for linear modulator circuits.
