The study compares temporal aspects of voicing in Russian and English. Specifically, it examines whether Russian‐English bilinguals who have learned English as a second language (L2) in early childhood are able to differentiate Russian and English consonants /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/ according to voice onset time (VOT). Monolingual Russian‐speaking 3‐year‐old children’s VOTs will be compared to those of monolingual Russian‐speaking adults. Bilingual (Russian and English) 9‐year‐old children’s VOTs will be compared to monolingual 9‐year‐old children’s VOTs. It is predicted that 9‐year‐old bilingual children will demonstrate appropriate voicing boundaries in English; however, their production of Russian VOTs will differ from the Russian monolingual production. |
