Seventeen patients with acute leukaemia (8 AML and 9 ALL) have entered a trial protocol involving two courses of ablative chemotherapy followed by rescue with autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT). The treatment was generally well tolerated and only one patient died during the period of marrow aplasia. Only one of the 10 patients receiving ablative chemotherapy with ABMT after first remission has survived for a prolonged period. This patient completed the double ABMT procedure and is well at 538 days. Among first remission patients, there has been only one early relapse (Thy-ALL), and the others are well at 60–960 days. Double ablative chemotherapy with ABMT may be useful in reducing minimal residual disease, thereby prolonging first remission in adult acute leukaemia. |
