Preserving archival materials of the Chinese overseas for future research and dissemination is the intellectual cornerstone of Chinese diaspora studies. Toward this end, building an infrastructure of the study of Chinese in the U.S. from the ground up has been of paramount importance to Asian American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley since its founding in 1969. Recent advances in Chinese American historiography, for example, would not have been possible had it not been for the successful struggles waged against intellectual racism in colleges and universities in the U.S. on the one hand and the search and rescue missions undertaken by some community organizations and institutions of higher education, such as the one I represent, the University of California, Berkeley, on the other hand.
