A technique for the determination of odor thresholds, that accounts for the possibility of correct responses from panelists without true discrimination, is proposed. An existing model is examined for its applicability to forced binary tests. In addition, two models for forced ternary choice situations have been tested. The odor threshold of n-butanol is determined through the use of these probability models and the results compared to those obtained using methods that are presently recommended. Both the two segment model and maximum likelihood estimate approach were found to be superior to current methods in the minimization of uncertainties in odor threshold determinations. |
