Flank or lumbar hernias are located in the lumbar region, the borders of which are the posterior border of the external oblique laterally, the 12th rib superiorly, the erector spinae muscle medially, and the iliac crest inferiorly. About 80% of flank hernias are due to trauma or surgery. Operations that commonly use a flank incision include nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, liver resection, and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Hernias form in this area postoperatively because of nerve damage causing muscle atrophy, muscle/tendon avulsion, or weakness of the aponeurosis. There are also primary lumbar hernias, which can be congenital or spontaneous. |
