The present study of silence situates its investigation in dramatic performance as a site of ordinary interaction and suggests connections between naturally-occurring speech and dramatic dialogue, especially as it relates to the role of silence in turn-taking and topic management. Actors interpret written texts in ways which subtly refine the turn-taking mechanism provided by the dramatists. In so doing they demonstrate an ad hoc assessment of silence as a category of interactive communication repertoire. The semiotic code of the written text becomes an aural experience in performance in which silence comes to possess illocutionary force. |
