Popis: The BSRL pebble bed heater-windtunnel facility was designed with the primary object of providing a means of studying problems associated with combustion in supersonic flow. In order to be able to perform significant and realistic experiments in supersonic combustion certain minimum conditions were desired. These included that the test gas should be air, that the flow be supersonic and of minutes duration, that the static temperature be realistic and that the test section be of reasonable dimension. Such considerations led to the selection of a blowdown windtunnel using a storage heater. Power requirements precluded the use of continuous heating systems, although the use of arc heaters was also rejected on the grounds that a suitable arc heater was not likely to be available for some years. This report will serve to describe the facility and to document the initial operating experience.
