Popis: Although tachograph charts provide valuable information for accident reconstruction, it can be difficult to interpret the tachograph recordings. This paper investigates problems in determining intensive braking parameters from the tachograph chart recordings. A number of braking trials were recorded by a tachograph and a decelerometer simultaneously. Next, a comparative analysis of the recordings was performed using both a conventional VDO tachograph method and by electronic processing with commonly available equipment. The results confirm that the quantitative analysis of intensive braking recording on a tachograph chart is unreliable for determining braking time and deceleration. When commonly available electronic methods are used in the analysis, it can be determined that the vehicle was braking intensively, but no numeric values can be given. The results obtained by means of the analysis of tachograph chart recordings done by the VDO method, with the use of a special microscope, should be considered the best approximation of the real process of braking. In the future, drawing tachographs probably will be replaced by electronic tools, but not until scanners with an optical resolution of about 7600 dpi are commonly available.
