Popis: A NUMBER of isomeric long-chain ketones have been prepared and specially purified, in the course of investigations on the solid-liquid transition in long-chain compounds1. As will be clear from the diagram for the ketones CnH2n + 1COC(16+n)H33−2n, the setting points depend in a remarkable way on the position of the CO dipole in the long-chain molecule. The maximum difference (between C8H17COC8H17 and C5H11COC11H23) of 9.2° may be compared with the difference in setting points between C5H11COC11H23 (s.p. 40.8°) and the corresponding paraffin C17H36 (s.p. 21.6°).
