Site exploration for civil engineering projects in the vicinity of Newport (Mon.) has enabled the form of the sub-drift rock floor to be plotted in the area about the mouth of the River Usk. An extensive sand and gravel deposit overlying the rock floor is proved, trenched about the river mouth by a late phase of down-cutting. Overlying clays contain discontinuous peat horizons. The relationship with the sub-drift floor and superficial deposits reported in other areas about the mouth of the Severn is considered. A correlation with the final stages of the chronology worked out for the Severn Valley by Wills (1938) , and elaborated for the lower Severn by Beckinsale & Richardson (1964) , is suggested. |
