Popis: Even with the devastation caused by AIDS, chronic disease has replaced infectious diseases as the principal source of morbidity and mortality in the Uinted States and most of the developed world. Much has been and is being done to prevent or control such devastating early cripplers and killers as cardiovascular disease, varieties of cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases through improvement in health care systems and pharmaceuticals. Much is also being done to help people alter their lifestyles in ways designed to reduce the risk of acquiring these diseases. Abstention from or cessation of smoking, a more healthful diet, and regular exercise habits can reduce risk of cardiovascular events and certain highly prevalent cancers such as lung and colon cancer. Some of these risk factors such as high vascular cholesterol and high blood pressure can also be lowered not only by adopting such behavior, but also via pharmaceutical therapy.
