Popis: | This chapter examines oil spillage incidences in the Niger Delta region in South-south, Nigeria. It starts by tracing the history of oil spillages and the extent of the problem. It highlights the causes and consequences of pollution to the environment. It then lists some sites heavily degraded by oil spill in this region. It concludes by listing the various strategies deployed by successive government in the management of oil spills in Nigeria, notably the launch in June 2016 of the $1 billion Clean Up and Restoration Programme of the Ogoniland in the Niger Delta by the Federal Government of Nigeria, announcing that financial and legislative framework had been put in place to begin implementing the recommendations made by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). |
