Popis: | Quantitative methods have been used in many ethnobotanical studies, and such as the determination of the utility value of the species (Prance et al, 1987; Pinedo-Vasquez et al, 1990), its relative importance to the cul ture or community (Amorozo and G?ly, 1988; Phillips and Gentry, 1993a, 1993b; Albuquerque and Chiappeta, 1994/1995), and the cultural signifi cance of plants to many human groups (Turner, 1988; Stoffle et al, 1990; Silva, 1997), among others. Those studies aimed to establish the role and importance of plants, rescue traditional botanical knowledge, and offer al ternatives for the conservation of the plant resources and the culture of the groups involved in the studies. The adoption of quantitative methods broad ens ethnobotanical studies by allowing the evaluation of data obtained with surveys as well as the comparison of data from other studies. The present study evaluates the importance of plants for communities located in the metropolitan area of Recife (RMA), Coastal-Forest Zone of Pernambuco, Brazil, through the Index of Cultural Significance (Stoffle et al, 1990). The data obtained indicate the ways the plants are used in each of the commu nities and how these can be influenced by the social, cultural, and economic status of individuals in those communities. |
