Genetic transformation of conifer tissues has been difficult due to low transformation frequencies, problematic detection and gene inactivation. Genetically transformed roots were obtained in seedlings of Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris and Pinus contorta by infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes (Magnussen et al., 1994). However, the transformation technique was far from optimal. Here we present a recently developed technique to obtain a high frequency of transgenic roots from a conifer, P. contorta (Yibrah et al., 1996). |
