Popis: | Completed in January 2022, the 2.1 km long 12.2 m diameter twin-bore Mumbai coastal road tunnel is country’s largest ever constructed using a tunnel boring machine. It is also India’s first undersea tunnel embracing all current international design and operational standards. This paper describes Mumbai’s unique hydrogeological conditions and its impact on the choice of tunnelling machine. It then discusses the logistics of transporting the huge machine through one of the worlds most congested cities; the decisions made in its assembly, lowering and re-launch; and how overall tunnelling challenges were overcome. |
