This paper reports on the results of both tests and the relevant preliminary analysis of sealing characteristics for a 1.0m ID vessel model under heat-up and cool-down thermal transient. The purposes of the test lie in verifying performance under thermal condition for a thick silver-plating GH169 O-ring, which has been developed by ourselves and is equivalent to the Inconel 718 O-ring; verifying the computer program system for sealing analysis, SMEC, developed by ourselves; observing the thermophysical phenomena, e.g. the bolt temperature lag. The results show that SMEC is of great value in practice and that flange rotation caused by thermal deformation and “over-loading” or “relaxation” of the bolts due to temperature lag is rather considerable. The difficult point in the thermal transient sealing analysis is to calculate precisely the loading increment of the bolt. |
