Popis: | This study is designed to examine the effects of the crises of the deaths of infants or children on Shona women in Zimbabwe Africa. Specifically the study investigates the relationship between marriage and family life situations before and after the death. It examines the changing self concepts social status family and social relationships from the perceptions of 124 who experienced the death of 1 or more infants and/or children. This study refutes the literature which suggests that people who experience high death rates depersonalize the high risk group and therefore are little a affected by the loss. The death of a child in this culture presented a profound crisis. In situations where the husband/wife relationship was solid with open communication and shared decision making and the husband was able to provide social and emotional support to his wife the marital relatonship tended to remain intact. When family crises were multiple husbands did not provide social support and the woman was blamed for the death the relationship deteriorated and in many cases divorce was the result. If the relationship was poor before the death occurred the crisis exacerbated the situation and led to the dissolving of the marriage. |
