Popis: Can nutrition influence outcome in critical illness? This is a highly controversial question with a large number of controversial issues involved, for each of which there is insufficient evidence. Over all, the aim of nutrition is to improve outcome by supplying energy and by preserving body proteins. The controversial questions are: When to start, what route of administration to use, how to determine energy need, how to determine protein need, how to consider degree of malnutrition? This chapter will focus on protein intake during critical illness and how it should be assessed and evaluated in this group of patients.
