Disorders of glutaminergic neurotransmitters play an essential role in the manifestations of symptoms and progression of neurodegenerative dementia, especially with the participation of NMDA receptors. Memantine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that blocks the effects of abnormally elevated glutamate levels, which can lead to neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Memantine is widely used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Also, experiments have shown the protective effect of memantine in damage to hippocampal cells by β-amyloid. This study aimed to investigate the possible direct positive effect of memantine on learning and memory processes in young rats. In the experiments, we used the behavioral reactions of young rats in the active avoidance test. We found that memantine is well-tolerated, improves learning ability, and motivational behavior characteristics reduce anxiety and fear, which in general can be described as an adaptive-stimulating effect. |
