Popis: | Intensive archaeological field investigations along the Coronado-Silver King Transmission Line (North End) began in September, 1976. These investigations were conducted by the Museum of Northern Arizona under contract with the Salt River Project. Forty-six sites along the transmission line route required mitigation procedures; site recording, collection, testing, and excavation were conducted as appropriate. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed a number of impressions resulting from the field work and outlined several new questions. Of the 46 investigated sites, five contained habitation structures of a permanent or semipermanent nature. The largest category of sites studied (15) evidently served as base camps for various types of resource utilization. The laboratory analysis for this project emphasized lithic technology due to the proportion of lithic sites investigated. Eight sites have been classified as large lithic scatters and four more served as quarries. In addition, all seven of the small artifact scatters contained a lithic component. The remaining seven sites were combined in a miscellaneous category due to various field and/or interpretive problems. Research-oriented ancillary field studies were conducted in support of the archaeological work at the 46 sites. These studies focused on Archaic sites in the project area and the utilization of the isolated canyon environments. This preliminary work suggests that the Archaic occupation was significant. The canyons, particularly Silver Creek Canyon, have served as resource bases throughout the entire history of man in the area. |
