Popis: | The diagnosis of orbital tumours has always been a great challenge to the ophthalmologist. By the introduction of fine needle aspiration biopsy in this region, a very helpful tool has been added. Fine needle aspiration biopsies have been performed in 49 patients with orbital lesions localized by CT. Surgical biopsies were performed in 38 of the patients. the cytological and histopathological diagnoses were compared and showed satisfactory agreement. Surgical biopsies were not performed in 11 cases as the cytological and clinical pictures were concordant and a biopsy was not considered to add more information of therapeutic importance. the only complications were two cases with orbital haematomas with an uneventful course. Fine needle aspiration biopsy may be considered as a reliable diagnostic method for orbital lesions with good accuracy and little discomfort for the patient. |
