An archaeological evaluation was carried out at Land Adjoining Chaucer Business Park, Dittons Road, Polegate, East Sussex in advance of the construction of two-storey offices and light industrial and warehouse units, including loading and car parking facilities. In total six 20m x 2.5m trenches were opened (Trenches 1 to 6). Two areas were opened (Trenches 7 and 8) over areas that had been previously stripped of their topsoil during ongoing construction works. Two features of archaeological interest were recorded. In Trench 1 and Trench 4 a shallow, heavily truncated ditch, Context 1/001 was examined. Orientated east to west, the only finds from the ditch were two fragments of fire-cracked and one piece of worked flint. A second ditch, Context 8/004 and orientated northeast to southeast, was recorded in Trenches, 5, 6 and 8. Modern rubble and waste, such as metal piping, bricks and builders gravel had been dumped along the length of the ditch, and it was concluded that the ditch was likely to be a Late-Post Medieval field boundary. No other features of archaeological interest were recorded in the evaluation and it was noted that the Site had been used as a dumping ground for waste from the surrounding building works. The natural geology encountered in all trenches was typical of the Weald Clay Formation, consisting of clays and mudstones. |
