The editors of three current journals that specialise in publishing peer-reviewed articles, reporting on the development, validation and implementation of Three Rs alternatives, describe the evolution of each of their journals from its inception to its current form, and consider its contribution to the end-goal of increasing global awareness of the Three Rs concept. The journals are Alternatives to Laboratory Animals, Alternatives to Animal Experimentation and Alternatives to Animal Testing and Experimentation, published in the UK, Switzerland and Japan, respectively. These journals were established as a result of a common recognition of the importance of the Three Rs concept, and the need to promote awareness of its principles. Each journal has evolved, in its own manner, from modest beginnings into its present form. Other initiatives, which stand out as particular distinguishing strengths of the individual journals, in terms of working toward the desired end-goal, are also highlighted. |
